WTF!? Marketing’s approach to Social Media is simple: you (presumably, a human) should use these tools to connect with other humans, not with the intent to sell them something, but because you both gain from the connection.
If you’re interested in classes on specific tools, I teach a weekly, hour-long social media class for $1 in Fort Collins called The Digital Gunslingers.
The key to using any communications tool is respecting the community that uses it. I talked about this idea at Ignite Fort Collins:
Business is a lot like dating. You can’t just ask the girl of your dreams for a kiss without knowing her; the same is true in business: you can’t just ask someone to fork over $1,000 to build their website, rotate their tires, or put out a hit on someone.
Some people say we’re in the Attention Economy. That is, we, as consumers, have given ourselves the tools (Twitter, Hulu, Facebook) to manage the demands on our attention in the way we see fit and ignore those things, like Miss Jennifer P. from 3rd grade (annoying), that we don’t want to give attention to. Business is gradually beginning to understand this; however, they’re subverting our “screening” tools for their own use (spam, interruption marketing).
I feel that we’re moving toward a Relationship (or Handshake) Economy. Now that we’ve filtered out the noise and crap we don’t care about, we have to screen out the hucksters and snake oil salesmen from the honest, hardworking business professionals. And that, to me, is what Social Media is all about.
WTF!? Marketing offers these social media services:
Social Media Strategy Creation, Implementation, and Ghost-Writing (when appropriate)
Profile Analysis for existing accounts
Account Creation and Optimization (WordPress, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Tumblr, and more)
Analytics and Metrics
ROI (Return on Investment)
Customization and Add-Ons (Backgrounds, custom CSS)
Joel Comm has a great saying: “Know Me, Like Me, Trust Me, Pay Me.”
I take it a few steps further: “See Me, Know Me, Like Me, Trust Me, Pay Me, Tell Your Friends”.
The economy is in shambles because businesses have failed to live by those rules. Suffice to say, they believe in “See Me, Pay Me, See Me”. That doesn’t work anymore. People want to know the people they’re paying for goods and services – just like the old days of knowing your banker, your plumber, your car salesman.
Let me help you optimize your social media efforts – I don’t claim to be a guru or an expert (because I don’t believe they exist – ask me why). However, I do know how to build and enhance trust, authenticity, and credibility.
I stand by all the work I do – I won’t just help you create social media profiles and then abandon you to your ravenous-as-zombie fans; I deal in long-term business partnerships. I’ll be there when you need me. You can click here to get started and contact me today.
